Midterm Essay Practice

Due: December18th

This is a practice essay to prepare you for the midterm. The midterm essay will be in the same, Four Stage Model, format.

Directions: Go to one of the websites listed below. FIND & PRINT out a painting, drawing or sculpture you want to write about. Use the Four Stage Model, see directions below, to write your essay. Be sure to include all the parts asked for in the essay, read the directions carefully. The essay must be hand written, pay attention to spelling and grammar. Hand in the print out of your artwork with your essay.

Four Stage Model:

1. Introduction: You are to describe the things about the artwork you can see, name and describe with certainty. I should be able to know what work you are describing by the narrative. (5 Points)

2. Body Paragraph: In this paragraph, analyze the composition using at least 3 elements and 3 principles of Art/Design. Do not just name the elements & principles, but also describe how they are used. Keep it factual/ (5 Points)

3. Body Paragraph: In this paragraph, interpret what is happening or explain what you think the artist is trying to express. Make sure to explain why you are making this statement based on what the artist did in the work.

(5 Points)

4. Concluding Paragraph: You are to make a personal aesthetic judgment, an emotional response, about the work you have written about. Base your judgment on five of the following specific concepts listed below. Briefly describe each of the five points you choose to address. Do not introduce new information here. (2 Points each, 10 Points total)

2. Design Quality

3. Expressiveness

4. Personal Response

5. Originality

6. A comparison with other work

7. Use of medium or technique
