7th Grade Self-Portraits: Cardboard & Sharpie

The following pieces were created by seventh grade students. They first learned about contour line drawings and did an exercise with a brown paper bag, you can see them here. To begin the portraits, I photographed them and they created these portraits from those reference photos. They began by drawing on the cardboard in pencil, then they outlined with black Sharpie. To create a background (in the form of texture) they ripped the top layer of cardboard off, revealing some of the corrugated sections. They could rip as much or as little as they liked, students then had the choice to add color.

6th Grade Abstract Name Designs

The sixth graders began the year creating an exercise focusing on positive and negative space. The concept is called a Notan. They began with a square piece of paper and created a drawing of their name in bubble or block letters. Then they outlined and filled the letters with black sharpie, these areas represent the positive space. Once their design was done it was time to make it abstract! We cut their design into 16, 2-inch squares that they then rearranged out of order. After they glued the pieces on to background paper, they then filled the negative space (or white areas) with color Sharpie. Here are some examples! You can also follow along daily on our Instagram page, the link is on the panel to the left.

7th Grade Brown Bag Drawings

At the end of last school year I gave my students a survey and asked them for feedback about what I could do differently. I then spent the summer planning new ideas for artwork, subject matter and media. So far the results have been great and I will post some student artwork as they begin to finish their first major unit. For daily updates don't forget to be checking out our Instagram page, it is open to the public, so you don't have to be on IG to see the page: @crms_art

Below are drawing exercises completed by my seventh grade students. They learned about contour lines (and other kinds of lines too), then they were asked to create a contour line drawing of a brown paper bag. They were each given their own bag and could manipulate it how they wanted to, without any majoring ripping. Once the drawing was done in pencil they drew over their lines in Sharpie.

Open House Information

Hello! I have created a movie version of my open house PowerPoint. I realize that with the schedule of open house, I only get to see families for five out of my twenty classes. Since I miss connecting with everyone else, you can see what I present by watching the movie below. Feel free to pause it on each slide so you actually have time to read it. The slide with my grading rubric may be hard to read, a copy of my rubric is shown on the 'class handouts' page here on my website. If you have any questions please feel free to call or email me. My contact info is on the last slide of the movie. Enjoy!

Welcome to CRMS Art 2016-2017

Welcome to Mrs. Warchol's Art Blog, I am so excited to have YOU in my class this year! I hope you've had a fun and restful Summer, I can't believe how fast it went. This is my eighth year in Pittsford and my sixth year at CRMS. In addition to teaching sixth, seventh and eighth grade art, I am also the art club advisor and coach Girls on The Run. I have been involved in the arts since high school and fell in love with it, specifically photography, immediately! I went to The University at Buffalo and got my Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in photography. I worked as a photographer right out of college and still own my own photography business. After about five years I decided to go back to college to get my Masters Degree and teaching certificate form Nazareth College. You can often find me at the Memorial Art Gallery or the George Eastman House. I love art so much I married a graphic designer, Mr. Warchol is an Art Director for Roberts Communication. We have a Boston Terrier named Rocko, he is kind of artistic, he mostly makes sculptures out of chewed shoes!

Please continue to refer back to the blog for class updates, student artwork and art club announcements. If you are curious to see the kinds of artwork we will be making, click on the grade level gallery tabs above. Also, please follow us on our new Instagram page (@crms_art) for daily updates from Mrs. Warchol, Mrs. Bay & Mrs. Brown. If you have your own IG page and post your own artwork don't forget to tag crms_art, we'd love to see what you are creating outside of class!

Summer Vacation!

I cannot believe how quickly this school year progressed and how much each of you grew during your time in my classroom. Whether it was tackling a new medium or trying a new technique, you each did a fabulous job rising to the high expectations I set for you. Not that I am surprised! The end of the year is always crazy and chaotic with meeting deadlines and finishing artwork and I am proud of those of you who came in to work during your lunch or study hall or after school. Your hard work and dedication was noticed and I hope you are proud of the work you created. For my eighth graders who are moving on to high school, I wish you the best of luck. For my sixth and seventh graders, be sure to put your sketchbook in a safe place for next year! You will be in great hands regardless of who your art teacher will be. For now I look forward to traveling to Chicago, working part-time, reading and playing with Rocko. I hope you all have a wonderful and restful summer!

7th Grade Visiting Artist- Jeremy Stock

This week our seventh grade students have been working with visiting artist Jeremy Stock. Jeremy is a professional comic, cartoon and caricature artist who lives in Buffalo, NY.

Jeremy began by introducing his work and talking about his path to becoming a professional artist. He also talked about design & composition, the history of comics, and showed similarities between comics and Ancient Egyptian & Cave Art.

Mr. Falzoi and Mr. Walker getting to have some fun!

Becky was brave enough to draw the master himself.
No surprise, she did amazing!

During Jeremy's second visit he started working with students to understand the layout and construction of their pages. He also helped to facilitate group collaboration and brainstorming to decide on subject matter and storyline, the results are varied and hilarious!

Jeremy shows students how they will draw their final
copy in blue pencil and then go over it in ink, just like the pros.

Planning and sketching out some characters.

A serious discussion about a talking soccer ball.

The students will work with their art teacher for the next four classes to create the layout and final drafts of their comic book. Jeremy will then come back for two classes to help them finalize and ink their pages. After a little digital magic done by Jeremy, the students will have a copy of their own comic book to take home. We could not have had this amazing opportunity without the support of our administration and the PTSA. Even though Art is a huge component to this work, students have been incorporating other subject areas like Social Studies, ELA and Math. They have also demonstrated teamwork, leadership and problem solving. Stay tuned for updates in the next couple of weeks.
