6th Grade Abstract Name Designs

The sixth graders began the year creating an exercise focusing on positive and negative space. The concept is called a Notan. They began with a square piece of paper and created a drawing of their name in bubble or block letters. Then they outlined and filled the letters with black sharpie, these areas represent the positive space. Once their design was done it was time to make it abstract! We cut their design into 16, 2-inch squares that they then rearranged out of order. After they glued the pieces on to background paper, they then filled the negative space (or white areas) with color Sharpie. Here are some examples!
